6/23/06: What's Hot in Shoes for Summer 2006?
Answer: Espadrilles, Platforms, and Wedges are hot, hot, hot for fashion spring and summer of 2006!
Remember Espadrilles? Now I wasn't fond of them twenty years ago - they were a bit too conservative looking for my taste...fortunately, every time a style returns there are some redeeming enhancements to the original look - which may be the case this time around for the Espadrille...
Ankle Wraps and straps remain in style from the previous year, good news if you invested in a pair or two last year! This is a fun look that can go from casual to dressy depending on what you wear with them - jeans, skirts and cropped pants can get a kick from the ankle wrap - which can be a very sexy look!
Metallics are still in style but are subdued. Try Bronze or Silver colored shoes and sandals. White & natural colors are the hottest for the two warm seasons.
If you're even thinking about wearing WHITE SHOES here's the Rule: "You can wear white shoes after Memorial Day until Labor Day - then it's time to put them away!" My East Coast upbringing has me fearful of wearing white shoes -as they are so seasonal and it was just safer to not wear white shoes at all than risk being out of season (which really was an outward signal that you we're not properly educated and didn't know any better!)
For the Casual Look of Summer opt for the classic flip-flop sandal, now available with all sorts of embellishments such as beading, sequins and metallic detailing (see above). Clay, glass and wooden beads and a hint of sparkle is fine for daytime, save the super sparkly stuff for evening - this may be conservative but you can't go wrong playing it safe - sequins on your feet in the daytime - you be the judge!
A well-proportioned wedge or sandal with low/medium heel works well for a petite woman, and adds a bit of height. A note of caution here - high heels and short shorts are a look reserved for those looking for more than just longer legs (although that is the goal in the look achieved) -thin healed pumps (stiletto types) should never be worn with shorts unless your a chorus girl, or auditioning to be one!
Going to be sporting a Mini Skirts this summer? Mini skirts are all about legs so Wedges, Platforms, and Espadrilles are an excellent choice to make your legs look longer and sexier.
Woven straps are a hot commodity along with retro detailing in the design. For the edgy shoe style, there are peep toe pumps that have picked up some buzz from celebs wearing them. Okay - these "granny inspired" pumps don't do much for me as they remind me of Popeye's "Olive Oil" and are way too "eighties," yet, perhaps a neutral pair in the closet wouldn't hurt...
Hope you've enjoyed this update...Until next time - "The Shoe Goddess"
